recalled outdoor park bench furnitureJo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores have voluntarily recalled 4500 outdoor park benches sold in its stores. Jo-Ann’s for outdoor furniture? Hey, I do crafts in my spare time and I saw these at my local store. They were good-looking and incredibly cheap - plenty of folks bought them - but unfortunately they can become unstable and break, posing a fall hazard.  Price was just too good to be true. These are the Best Value park benches with a green metal frame and wooden slats. The benches were made in China, measure 50-inches long by 22-inches wide by 30-inches high; and were sold at Jo-Ann stores nationwide from January 2008 through March 2008 for about $30.  If you bought one of these park benches, stop using it immediately and return the outdoor furniture to the nearest Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft store for a full refund. For more information, contact Jo-Ann Stores toll-free at (888) 739-4120 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or email the firm at guest.services@joann.com. You can also visit the firm’s Web site at www.joann.com.

Spring means it’s time to clean the outdoor and patio furniture for warm weather fun.  Maybe you didn’t invest in the outdoor furniture covers and now all your furniture is coated in dust or grime. No need for worries. Here’s a great article from the Philadelphia (PA, USA) Inquirer on cleaning wicker, aluminum, plastic and wrought iron outdoor and patio furniture. It details cleaning steps for each type of furniture; and even has tips on removing mildew stains from canvas patio umbrellas and washing your outdoor and patio furniture cushions.  Summer is not far away…get your outdoor and patio furniture ready now.

Barzebo Pavilion with 2 Sling Bar Stools. Click for info.Speaking of outdoor bar furniture, I just happened across this sleek-looking set while browsing Amazon. The Barzebo Pavilion is a gazebo-styled portable outdoor bar with two sling bar stools.  The water resistant two-tier canopy top snaps on to the powder-coated steel frame, and its counter sports a tempered glass top.  I can see having one of these on my patio this summer for the crowd - or just me - to hang out in.  This may be interesting if you are looking for a stylish outdoor bar furniture set to serve drinks and nibbles to your guests this summer.

Solar Panel Outdoor Furniture Interesting, But Is It Really Useful?

An interesting news bit I read today…a company called SunTable has created a solar panel tabletop to be used outdoors.  It’s supposed to help lure couch potatoes who would not normally spend time outside with the incentive of free electricity to run their laptop, TV or portable stereo.  It’s claimed to run a laptop for 3 hours or a portable TV for 4 hours before needing recharging;  tho’ I suppose that if it’s outside in the sun it would be charging continuously.  Yes, it’s supposed to be weather resistant; although the makers do caution not to use it in the rain (hmmm, wonder why?).

It seems to my humble way of thinking that setting anything on the table like your laptop and papers (as I might like to do) would block the absorption of sunlight and impair charging;  not to mention possibly damaging your laptop with the heat being generated by reflective solar panels.  In my Southern neck of the woods the electronics would fry.  And the price is, frankly, prohibitive - $3600!  An interesting green idea that still needs work before marketing.  You can see the SunTable at http://suntable.net.

Consider Insuring Your Valuable Outdoor and Patio Furniture

I just read two stories online about outdoor furniture.  The first out of the UK was from a financial company - American Express - advising homeowners to insure their outdoor furniture. According to them a British household’s outdoor tables and chairs costs an average of £248 ($510 USD); not including such niceties as patio heaters and sun loungers.  I dismissed the story at first as just another way for the insurers to make money by instilling fear.  But the very next story I read happened to be about a rash of outdoor patio furniture theft from restaurants in a South Carolina town. It just made me think - if one is going all out to decorate their outdoor areas with beautiful and often quite valuable items, it does makes sense to insure those items under the homeowner’s general insurance policy just as one would their interior furnishings; especially if the items are unsecured out of doors in an unlocked area.  Just a little food for thought…
